Obituary for James Frederick Johnson

James F. Johnson, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at the Saratoga Hospital.

Born August 5, 1924 in Cohoes, NY, he was the son of the late Edward and Mary (Sharrow) Johnson.

James was enlisted in the Conservation Corps during the Great Depression where he worked in Salt Lake City by building structures for the ski slopes, and also doing rescue work during avalanches. In World War II, James proudly served in the United States Army where he achieved the rank of Corporal on the European Front where he was in the Battle of the Bulge in the 8th Armored Division, B Company. He was also responsible for transporting high ranking officers.

On November 21, 1948, James married the love of his life, Mary Smith, at St. Barnabas Church in Troy, NY.

Jim was employed for many years as a carpenter at the Watervliet Arsenel, and also at the New York State Capitol.

James was a Life Member and Vice Commander of the D.A.V., Father Kelley unit in Troy, NY. He also loved the outdoors and could often be found hunting and fishing, as well as snowshoeing and boating. He was also very skilled in woodworking, and had a beautiful singing voice.

In addition to his parents, Jim is predeceased by his son, Dale J. Johnson, his brother William Johnson, his sister Mary Irene Johnson, a brother-in-law, Albert Doyle, and his two best buddies, Bill Shaw and Bill Bruce.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 66 years, Mary A. Johnson, his sons; James F. Johnson Jr., Scott T. Johnson and his wife Carlyn, and Eric E. Johnson and his wife Debbie, his grandchildren; Chris Jorden Bunting-Johnson, and Darren, Seth, Eric, and Jared Johnson, his great-grandchildren; Harper Kate and Colby Grace Johnson, his sisters Mildred Doyle and Dorothy Johnson, and his brothers, Walter and Leonard Johnson.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, September 29, 2014 at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 80 Saratoga Ave, South Glens Falls, with Rev. Guy A. Childs officiating.

Rite of Committal will take place at 2pm on September 29, 2014 at the Dunning Street Cemetery in Malta, NY.
