Obituary for Mahlon George "Bud" Morrison

FORT EDWARD

Mahlon “Bud” G. Morrison, 84, passed away peacefully, 9 days short of his 85th birthday, on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Glens Falls Hospital, with his family by his side.

Born October 4, 1929 in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late George and Myrtle (Brody) Morrison.

Bud attended Fort Edward High School where he played basketball, baseball, and football. He received a football scholarship to Rutgers University where he received his B.A. in Social Economics. Bud’s picture hangs in Hubbard Hall for his basketball talents, but his real passion was baseball. He played for the Independents and was scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Left handed pitchers/first basemen were rare in those days. The stories are still being told about some fantastic hits he had at the local baseball diamond. Through his life, he loved to golf, he was in a bowling league (he had a wicked left hook shot) and he was an avid reader.

On May 31, 1956, he married Doris Anne Layhee and embarked on what was to be a vast and varied journey. His career path changed and he went on to become an insurance agent, eventually moving to Granville, where most of his ancestors settled. He owned his own agency there and in Cambridge.

In 1969, his path changed again. He sold the agencies and purchased Dunkin Donuts on Glen Street in Queensbury. In 1970, he moved his family back to Fort Edward, residing on Old Fort Street. During that time, he also bought Mountainview Housekeeping Cottages and Motel on Philip Street in Lake George, and in 1972, relocated his family there.

In 1976, he built what was to be his final home in Fort Edward where his family still resides. He sold the motel in Lake George and eventually built a 2nd Dunkin Donuts in South Glens Falls. Two more shops followed in Fort Edward and West Glens Falls. In 2004, at the age of 75, he retired after 40 years of business ownership.

In addition to his parents, Bud is predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Richard Morrison.

Bud is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris A. (Layhee) Morrison, his 5 children: Steve Seeley (Joanne) of Queensbury, Marjorie Bellingham (John) of Australia, Lonni Farr (Warren) of South Glens Falls, Julie White (Ron) of Fort Edward, and Jay Morrison (Virginia) of Fort Edward, 12 grandchildren: Andrew, Brett, Jeremy, Scott (Australia), Scott (Queensbury), Keith, Nicole, Kara, Ronnie, Ryan, Corey, and Ray, 7 great-grandchildren: Merissa, Ava, Brayden, A.J., Kadon, Paige, and Jaxson, as well as his sister, Nancy Morrison of Fort Edward.

Friends may call from 11-1pm on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828. To leave online condolences or to view Bud’s Book of Memories, please visit www.kilmerfuneralhome.com.
