Obituary for Marion Elizabeth Cridge (Garrity)

Marion Elizabeth Cridge (Garrity)
Gansevoort

Marion Elizabeth (Garrity) Cridge, 78, passed away on Tuesday, December 09, 2014 at her home after a long illness with cancer and paraneoplastic syndrome.

Born in Sharon, CT on February 12, 1936, she was the daughter of Constance (Mantas) and the late Kyran Edward Garrity.

She was raised in Millerton, NY and graduated from Millerton High School. Following graduation from New Paltz State Teachers College in 1957, Marion divided her time between raising two daughters, teaching art in the public school system, and taking many graduate courses. During this time, she also found the time to practice the many forms of art in which she was involved such as batiq, clay, mosaic, and the art form she focused on most after retirement in 1991, that of hand quilting. In addition to her art, Marion had a beautiful singing voice and always sang in choirs of the churches to which she belonged. She was a passionate organic gardener plus she always had spectacular flower gardens. An avid reader, she belonged to a cherished book club.

On August 23, 1958, she married William A. Cridge. They settled in Latham where they raised their two daughters. After retirement, she designed a solar home they then had built in Granville. In 2010 after she became ill, they moved to Gansevoort, NY.

Marion is predeceased by her father, Kyran Garrity, and two brothers, David and John Garrity.
Left to cherish her memories are her 99 year old mother, Constance M. Garrity of Saratoga Springs, NY, husband of 56 years, William Cridge, two daughters, Denise Ann Cridge of New York City, and Lisa Jeanne Cridge of Arlington, VA, sisters Marjorie Garrity of Scottsdale, AZ and Catherine (Troy) Offutt of Broken Arrow, OK, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 10am-11am on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church, 15 Maplewood Parkway, South Glens Falls, NY 12803. Some of Marion’s artwork will be on display and a string quartet will play from 10:30-11. A memorial service will follow at 11am at the church with Rev. Jeffrey Stratton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
