Ethel May (Doty) Varney, 89, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Washington Center in Argyle.

Born in Fort Edward on December 11, 1925, she was the daughter of the late David and Ethel (Lewis) Doty.

She was a graduate of Fort Edward High School.

On June 23, 1949, Ethel married Alfred K. Varney in Maine. They spent many years together before his passing in December 1975.

Ethel worked for many years for Chase Bag and General Electric before she retired in 1985.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fort Edward, Rebecca’s Eastern Star, and Dick Ladd Club. She enjoyed cross stich, gardening, was an avid Mets Fan, and loved to go shopping.

Besides her parents and husband Ethel is predeceased by her sisters, Edith Hill, Elmetta Aurelia, brothers, William Doty, Walter Doty and Lester Doty.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Lawrence Varney and wife Gail of Argyle, Marsha Witham and husband Bruce of Florida, Linda Groom and husband William of Hudson Falls, grandchildren, Susan Harrison and husband William, Lawrence Varney Jr., Kenneth Tracey and wife Amy, Missy Moore and husband Chris, William Groom Jr. and wife Ali, Steven Groom and wife Annette, seventeen great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will follow calling hours at 7pm at the funeral home with Rev. Derek Hansen, pastor of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be at 1pm on Tuesday May 12, 2015 at Union Cemetery, Fort Edward.
