Obituary for Eileen Marie Murphy

Eileen Marie Murphy
BALLSTON SPA

On Sunday, September 20, 2015, one of the kindest people known, Eileen M. (DiDio) Murphy, of Queensbury, NY, lost her years long battle with cancer at the Gateway House of Peace in Ballston Spa, NY.

Born July 24, 1948 in Glens Falls, NY, Eileen was the daughter of the late James J. DiDio and Margaret (La Londe) Didio. Born into a large extended family with numerous siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins, Eileen learned the importance of family at an early age. Throughout her life she was always there for them.

In November 1968, she married Michael Murphy. He was a member of the US Air Force so Eileen traveled with him throughout the United States and Asia to his various duty stations until 1988, at which point Eileen and their daughter Jennifer returned home to Glens Falls.

Eileen worked for Evergreen Bank in the Mortgage Collateral Department for over a decade and then went to work in the Telecommunications Department at Glens Falls Hospital where she was affectionately known as “Murph”. She retired in 2011.

She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life; a walk in the woods, an evening campfire, or an afternoon watching her beloved NY Yankees, along with a beer and a burger. An avid Springsteen fan, one of “The Boss’s” songs was usually heard in her car or home.

Eileen will be remembered most for her unselfishness, her kind heart, and her love of family. She practiced random acts of kindness such as paying the bill for stranger behind her in line at a coffee shop. If she won money on a lottery scratch off game, she would often return to the place of purchase and share the winnings with the clerk who sold her the ticket. She would run errands and do chores for family members who might be unable to do so themselves. She always put others first.

In addition to her parents and grandparents, Eileen was predeceased by her brother, James “Little Jimmy” DiDio, several aunts and uncles, and her much beloved Cairn terrier, Munson.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter Jennifer, who provided much of Eileen’s care as her health deteriorated. Jennifer’s father Michael Murphy also survives her. Surviving siblings are sisters Ann Farrell (Mike) and their three children, Mikey, Heather and Laura; Beatrice DiDio and her four children; Valerie DiDio and her daughter, and brother David DiDio (Dawn) and their three children. In addition, Eileen leaves more than twenty great nieces and nephews, of which many were very close to her, especially Jake Petralia, with whom she had a very special bond. Many cousins, friends, and former coworkers also mourn her passing. Eileen’s companion for the past two decades, Richard Ryan, will always cherish their time together.

At Eileen’s request, there will be no calling hours or services. Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803. To leave online condolences, please visit www.kilmerfuneralhome.com. To truly memorialize Murph, and to keep her in our hearts, we should all look to take care of family and to help those less fortunate. Random acts of kindness, as Eileen practiced, will keep her with us forever.

Eileen and her family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Coppins, Dr. Stoutenberg, Lauren Cabana, PA, the staff at the CR Wood Cancer Center, High Peaks Hospice, and especially The Gateway House of Peace for all their care during this time.
