Obituary for Mae E. Laing

Mae E. Laing
South Glens Falls
Mae E. (Osberg) Laing, 83, of South Glens Falls, passed away on October, 31, 2015, at Glens Falls Hospital with her family at her side.
Born December 20, 1931 in Cambridge, NY, in a raging snowstorm, she was the daughter of Ralph Emerson and Mildred (Harwood) Osberg. Her father had to stop and put chains on the car in order to get to the hospital, which was just the beginning of her adventures.
Mae graduated from Cambridge High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1956. She served at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX, Lowry AFB, and Bolling Field. She was incredibly proud of her service and was honorably discharged as an Airman First Class in 1959. She worked at Glens Falls Insurance Company following the Air Force.
Mae married George E. Laing, Sr. in 1961. They moved to South Glens Falls and raised four children. The family enjoyed camping at Thirteenth Lake and family outings with the relatives in Greenwich. When she wasn’t lost in a book, Mae spent her spare time volunteering, quilting, crafting, socializing with friends, and bowling with the Monday morning bowling club. You could also catch her at the polls during elections. One her favorite things was her flowers, always wanting to show off her prize iris collection, she took great care of them as she did all things she touched.
In addition to her parents, Mae was predeceased by her husband, George E. Laing, Sr., her grandson, Kyle Reed Laing, her brother, Harris Osberg (Elinor) and her sisters, Helen Fryer (Ned) and Beverley Lyon (Harold).
Left to cherish her memory are her four children: George E. Laing, Jr. (Kathleen) of Albany, David Laing of Ballston Lake, Andrew Laing (Sue) of South Glens Falls, and Sue Fuller (Don) of Ashburn, VA; and nine grandchildren: Derek Laing, Alexander Laing, Nathan Laing, Evan Laing, Lucas Laing, Nicole Laing, Adam Laing, Benjamin Fuller, and Emily Fuller; two siblings, Martha Simiele (Francis) and Roy Osberg (Alice); plus numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends, especially her dinner partners, Howard and Wini Doster, and her afternoon tea buddy, Ceil Curran.
Mae will be remembered for being a classy lady who treated others with respect and kindness. One of her favorite sayings was, “It doesn’t cost anything to be nice.” She was devoted to her family, and she overflowed with pride when she talked of her children and grandchildren. Her time in the Air Force sparked a lifelong love of flying and travel. Mae visited much of the United States, as well as Russia, Germany, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, and Canada. In more recent years, her travels have been closer to home, enjoying senior trips with the Moreau Community Center and an annual camping trip in the Adirondacks with her extended family. To know her was to love her and her family and friends will miss her very much.
Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, November 2, 2015 from 4-7 p.m. at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main St. South Glens Falls, NY 12803. To view Mae’s book of memories and to post online condolences, please visit our website at www.kilmerfuneralhome.com
