Obituary for Stephen L. Godfrey

Stephen L. Godfrey
Fort Edward

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Stephen L. Godfrey of Fort Edward on Wednesday, April 27, 2016. He was 64 years old.

Born on Feb. 19, 1952 in Glens Falls, Steve was the son of Sally Ann (King) Godfrey and the late Lawrence C. Godfrey.

Steve graduated from Fort Edward High School in 1969 where he was a part of the Vagabond Drum and Bugle Corps. After high school, he attended Siena College where he enjoyed playing rugby and earned his Bachelor’s Degree.
As a young man, Steve worked on Lock 7 with his father-in-law before going to work for the State of New York as a tax auditor for 33 years. After retirement, he followed in his father’s footsteps working part-time at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home.

On October 30, 1976, Steve married the love of his life, Colleen (Nadeau) Godfrey at St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Edward with the late Father John Mea officiating the service.

Steve enjoyed skiing on West Mountain in the winter and spending summers boating and water skiing on Lake George. He loved his boat and just simply being near the water. He enjoyed camping on the islands in Lake George and tropical vacations with his wife and family. He loved working on his house, in his yard, and offered a helping hand to anyone in need. He loved football and loved to hate the New York Giants.

Most of all Steve loved spending time with his family and friends. He took an active role in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives and was extremely proud of their accomplishments. Steve will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, his ability to entertain his family and friends, the kindness in his baby blue eyes, and his beautiful smile.

Steve’s kind heart was loved by all and he will be dearly missed.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alexis and Muriel Nadeau.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife and mother; his two daughters, Estelle LeClair and her husband, Jeffrey and their children, Alex, Jeremy and Zac and Stephanie Birn and her husband, Jason; his son, Scott Godfrey; his five siblings, Kathleen Chance and husband Andrew, Theresa Girard and husband Daniel, Mary Joy Mosher and husband William, Patricia O’Rourke and husband Kevin, John Godfrey and wife Maryellen; three aunts, Alice Savasta, Beatrice Nichols, Katherine Maziejka; an uncle, James Godfrey; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
