Fort Edward

Elwin “Bud” Matt, 83, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Buffalo on July 28, 1933, he was the son of the late Louis and Gladys (Martin) Matt.

He attended school in Hudson Falls and Fort Edward before he left and enlisted in the United States Navy. Bud served his country with great pride and honor from December 1951- December 1955. He was a proud member of the Fort Edward American Legion Chapter 1133.

On July 10, 1954, he married the love of his life Elizabeth Jean Carpenter at St. Joseph Church in Fort Edward.

Bud worked at Great Meadow and Washington Correctional Facilities and retired after 25 years of service and held several different jobs in his retirement.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially enjoyed his yearly fishing trips to Gloucester, MA. Bud had a great love for music. He was a self-taught musician of several instruments, and especially enjoyed playing the guitar with his Johnny Cash voice.

Buds greatest loves were his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He enjoyed his many vacations camping with his wife, weekends playing music and dancing with Jean.

In addition to his parents, Bud is predeceased by his brother, William Matt and his wife Elizabeth “Betty” and their infant son, Daniel, and many cherished aunts, uncles and cousins from Hoosick Falls.

Left to cherish Bud’s memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Jean Matt, daughter, Linda Godfrey and husband Tom of Fort Edward, son, Frank Matt and his significant other, Vicki Wood of Glens Falls, grandchildren, Ian Godfrey and fiancée, Ashley Simoncavage, Emily Boucher and husband Matthew, Steven Matt and wife Lynette, and Sarah Beth Matt, great grandchildren, Elle and Matthew Boucher, and Hunter and Cole Matt, along with many brother’s and sister’s in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, September 12, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Church, 164 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Fort Edward, NY.
