Obituary for Helen Mary Toney

Glens Falls
Helen M. Toney, born on March 17, 1921, of Fredella Avenue, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Helen, a lifelong resident of the city, was the daughter of the late Mary and Michael Toney.

She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy.

Helen worked for several years at the Shirt Factory in Glens Falls and later worked in the family greenhouse business.

Helen was a lifelong member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in South Glens Falls where she participated in the Ladies Society and sang in the church choir.

Helen had a very large extended family, including eight nephews, plus all of their children and grand-children. She treated and loved them all like her own and cherished her time spent with them. Helen was famous for her homemade Syrian bread and love of baking and cooking. She also enjoyed tending to her garden.

In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by four sisters, Irene Toney Jacobs, and her husband Leo, Mary Toney, Anna Toney George, and her husband Casper, and Jennie Toney; a brother, Thomas Toney and his wife, Susan; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by her nephews, Robert Jacobs and his wife, Jan and family of Michigan; James Jacobs of South Glens Falls, John Toney of South Glens Falls, Michael Toney and his wife, Linda and family of Queensbury, David Toney and his wife, Jeannine and family of Ballston Spa, Jeffrey Toney and his wife, Lori and family of South Glens Falls, William George, and his wife, Nancy and family of Connecticut, and Dr. Daniel George and family of Connecticut; and two aunts, Sophie Hansa and Louise Ferris, of Glens Falls.

At Helen’s request, there will be no calling hours.

A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 20, 2017, with Reverend Phillip Begley officiating, in St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 55 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

Burial will follow at St. George Cemetery in South Glens Falls.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.
