Charles Grant Smith, 74, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Glens Falls Hospital with his family by his side.

Born and raised in Gansevoort, he spent most of his life on Brownville Road. He was the son of the late Charles Grant II and Bertha (Allen) Smith.

He graduated in 1961 from South Glens Falls High School. After high school, Grant joined the Air Force in 1964 and was enlisted till 1968.

Grant retired from 229 Carpenters and Millwrights after several years of service. He was a lifelong member of the Gansevoort Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a ten-year member of the Adirondack Sportsman Alliance.

Grant married the love of his life, Kathryn Porter, on July 19, 1969 and spent 23 years together until her passing in 1992.

He loved hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons. Grant had hunted bear, moose, caribou, and wild boar. His disability never stopped him from doing what he loved. He loved to gab no matter where he might be, from Maine to Alaska he would always run into someone he knew.

Grant enjoyed his grandchildren immensely. Attending countless sporting events, concerts, breakfasts, and graduations.

In addition to his parents and wife, Grant is predeceased by his brothers, Richard (Rick) Smith, Clarence (Bud) Smith and his wife, Janice.

Left to cherish his memory include his children, Stephen Smith and his wife, Cheryl, Stephanie Smith, Charles G. Smith IV and his wife, Eileen, and Susan Lehner; his grandchildren, Evan Smith and his partner Rebekah, Alexandra Smith, Corey Smith, Anna Mann, Dylan Smith, and Micah Lehner; his great grandchildren, Carter Grant Smith, Greyson Smith; his sister-in-law, Sharon Auman; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Porter; and his favorite nieces and nephews, Lynn, Jeff, Becky, Sheri, Michelle, as well as many cousins, aunts and uncles.

Thank you to the amazing care and compassion given to Grant and his family by the Glens Falls Hospital T-5, especially to Dr. Jackson, Dr. Masson, Dr. Rowley and the countless nurses who were continuously by his side, including Sister Donna.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10am on Monday, June 26, 2017 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow the funeral service at the Gansevoort Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Grant’s memory may be made to the ASA Adirondack Sportsman Alliance, 25 Apple Tree Lane, Gansevoort, NY 12831. The ASA organization believes in giving back to the communities that we live in by supporting various charities such as our local food pantries, Adopt a Soldier, Scholarships for seniors moving to higher education and the Wounded Warrior program.
